Pride is a biopic drama feature film released by Lionsgate Entertainment on March 23, 2007 (see 2007 in film). Loosely based upon the true story of Philadelphia swim coach James “Jim” Ellis, Pride stars Terrence Howard, Bernie Mac, and Kimberly Elise, and was directed by Sunu Gonera.

Pride is a film that depicts African-Americans succeeding in a sport swimming that is still largely dominated by whites. This differed from most other African-American films with sport themes as they usually feature sports where African-Americans have progressed into the mainstream, such as basketball (such as Coach Carter) and football (such as Gridiron Gang, Remember the Titans). Pride differed from this theme by bringing attention to the often overlooked world of African-American swimmers.

The film centers around Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard) and grouchy but caring janitor Elston (Bernie Mac). The two have a short-lived rivalry before becoming good loyal friends.

Plot summary

It is 1974 and life is not easy for an African-American male, even a college-educated one like Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), to find employment. Struggling to find anything better, Jim, a former competitive swimmer, accepts the job of dismantling the dilapidated Marcus Foster Recreation Center operated by the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. The center includes a swimming pool. Ellis’ presence immediately causes some friction between him and a bitter, overprotective janitor named Elston (Bernie Mac) who works there. Elston doesn’t mean any harm but he is afraid to let the center get closed down. One day, Jim sees a group of troubled black teens who have just been thrown off the basketball court and invites them for a swim. Andre (Kevin Phillips), Hakim (Nate Parker), Reggie (Evan Ross), Puddin Head (Brandon Fobbs), and Walt (Alphonso McAuley) prove to be fairly capable swimmers and with a few pointers, could become great swimmers. With some help from Elston, Jim decides to try and save the public swimming pool by starting the city first all African-American swim team. When the team also acquires Willie (Regine Nehy), a female swimmer more gifted than any of the guys, the prospects of competing against much more experienced rival teams begin to seem more positive. Jim also develops a romantic interest in a beautiful city worker (Kimberly Elise). Throughout their struggles, in or out of the swimming pool, Jim and Elston embraces and mentors the kids, hoping to help them become successful at swimming and in all aspects of their lives.

Reaction

Pride was met with mixed reviews, with a 46% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics criticized the use of the word nigger in the film’s opening scene where Jim is confronted by a racist predominantly white college that object to his presence in the water of their pool and refuses to swim with him because they say he is dirty. The film also has a visibly upsetting scene where Jim is pinned to the floor under the boot of a white policeman. Although these words and images may be difficult for some viewers (explaining the film’s PG rather than G rating), they were included with the intent to illustrate the severity of the racism faced by young black swimmers growing up in the segregated 1960s. Shockingly, the film was a box office bomb.

Users seemed to enjoy the film more, with a 70% rating.

Trivia

The film is notable for its inclusion of many up and coming actors who are the children of established celebrities from the previous generation. Evan Ross, who plays one of the athletes, is the son of the famous musical pioneer Diana Ross. Scott Reeves is the son of actor Clint Eastwood.

The real Jim Ellis makes a cameo appearance in the film as the city worker who takes the basketball rim down.

I want to introduct something about 2.4GHz Wireless Home Theater.
2.4GHz Wireless Home Theater
2.4GHz wireless home theater speaker system with remote controller Item Number: M100TFW

The Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) is the protocol used in the ATSC digital television system for carrying metadata about each channel in the broadcast transport stream of a TV station and for publishing information about television programs so that viewers can select what to watch by title and description.

Contents

1 What PSIP does

What PSIP does

PSIP defines virtual channels and content ratings, as well as electronic program guides with titles and (optionally) descriptions to be decoded and displayed by the ATSC tuner.

PSIP can also send:

the exact time referenced to UTC and GPS time;

the [short_name], which some stations use to publish their callsign.

PSIP is defined in ATSC standard A/65, the most recent revision of which is A/65C, published in 2006. A/69 is a recommended practice for implementing PSIP in a TV station.

PSIP also supersedes A/55 and A/56 protocol (which have been deleted by the ATSC) methods of delivering an inferior program guide. TV Guide On Screen is a different, proprietary system provided by datacasting on a single station, while PSIP is required, at least in the United States, to be sent by every digital TV station.

PSIP information may be passed through the airchain using proprietary protocols or through use of the XML-based Programming Metadata Communication Protocol (PMCP, or ATSC A/76) facility metadata scheme.

Included tables

STT (system time table)1 - current time, transmitted at least once per second, with an accuracy of new time values within 1 second or better

MGT (master guide table)1 - data pointers to other PSIP tables

TVCT (terrestrial virtual channel table)1 - defines each virtual channel and enables EITs to be associated with the channel

CVCT (cable virtual channel table) - assigns numbers to each virtual channel and enables EITs to be associated with the channel

RRT (rating region table) - content ratings for each country (region) covered by the station, save the U.S., as that region is loaded into TV sets already

EIT (event information table)1 - titles and program guide data

ETT (extended text table) - detailed descriptions of channels (Channel Extended Text Table or CETT) and aired events (Event Extended Text Table or EETT)

DCCT (directed channel change table) -

DCCSCT (directed channel change selection code table) - provides for the ability to update states, counties and program genres used in DCCT tables

1 indicates a US FCC requirement

Directed channel change

The DCC function lets broadcasters tell a DTV receiver where to change, based upon the viewer’s settings. This is most likely to be a ZIP or other postcode, which can select demographically-based programming to show, such as television commercials or weather bulletins, possibly taken from an accompanying datacasting channel.

Implementation of the DCC feature is entirely optional, and depends on development of receiver and decoder technology. For example, a digital video recorder could record commercials broadcast at other times for later replay, so that many more different commercials could be shown in different parts of a large metro area than can actually be transmitted at once.

Earl Grey tea

I want to introduct something about .

Tin of Lipton Finest Earl Grey

Earl Grey tea is a tea blend with a distinctive flavour and aroma derived from the addition of oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit.

Traditionally the term “Earl Grey” was applied only to black tea; however, today the term is also applied to green teas, including white tea and oolong, and tisanes, such as rooibos, that contain oil of bergamot, or a bergamot flavour. Because of Earl Grey’s aroma and Twinings’ distinctive packaging in England with Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, the tea is sometimes called “Old Stinky”.

History

This section is written like a personal reflection or essay and may require cleanup. Please help improve it by rewriting it in an encyclopedic style. (August 2008)

The Earl Grey blend is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s and author of the Reform Bill of 1832, who reputedly received a gift, probably a diplomatic perquisite, of tea flavoured with bergamot oil, taken from bergamot, a citrus fruit typical of Southeast Asia.

According to one legend,[citation needed] a grateful Chinese mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey’s men first presented the blend to the Earl. Given that this blend of tea was first made from fermented black Ceylon teas, there is reason to doubt this legend. Additionally, green tea is much more popular in China than black tea, making it unlikely that the Chinese would develop a recipe for what we now call Earl Grey. Finally, Lord Grey never set foot in China, and bergamot is not found there.

Jacksons of Piccadilly claim that it was they who originated Earl Grey’s Tea, Lord Grey having given the recipe to Robert Jackson & Co. partner George Charlton in 1830; according to Jacksons the original recipe has been in constant production and has never left their hands. Theirs has been based on China tea since the beginning.[citation needed]

Similar teas and beverages

Twinings also has a proprietary branded tea variety called “Lady Grey” made with lemon and Seville orange in addition to bergamot. Also of note is that Twinings received an official endorsement from the sixth Earl Grey, Richard Grey, whose signature appears on packages of Twinings Earl Grey. Twinings does not use bergamot oil in its tea, instead it now uses an artificial flavour.

The beverage company Snapple has released a tea beverage based on Earl Grey called Snapple Classic Tea Earl Gray.

Many boutique tea stores sell a similar blend with added rose petals known as French Earl Grey

A beverage called “London Fog” is a combination of Earl Grey, steamed milk and vanilla syrup.

Earl Grey teas made with extra large amounts of bergamot are often called “Earl Greyer”.

Toxicology

In one study, oil of bergamot was linked to certain phototoxic compounds. Bergamot is also a source of bergamottin which, along with the chemically related compound 6,7-dihydroxybergamottin, is believed to be responsible for the grapefruit juice effect in which the consumption of the juice affects the metabolism of a variety of pharmaceutical drugs.

Petroleum industry

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I want to introduct something about .

The petroleum industry includes the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and pipelines), and marketing petroleum products. The largest volume products of the industry are fuel oil and gasoline (petrol). Petroleum is also the raw material for many chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and plastics. The industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream and downstream. Midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category.

Petroleum is vital to many industries, and is of importance to the maintenance of industrialized civilization itself, and thus is a critical concern for many nations. Oil accounts for a large percentage of the world energy consumption, ranging from a low of 32% for Europe and Asia, up to a high of 53% for the Middle East. Other geographic regions consumption patterns are as follows: South and Central America (44%), Africa (41%), and North America (40%). The world consumes 30 billion barrels (4.8 km3) of oil per year, with developed nations being the largest consumers. 24% of the oil produced in 2004 was consumed in the United States. The production, distribution, refining, and retailing of petroleum taken as a whole represents the world’s largest industry in terms of dollar value.

Natural history

Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid found in rock formations. It consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, plus other organic compounds. It is generally accepted that oil, like other fossil fuels, formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years. Over time, the decayed residue was covered by layers of mud and silt, sinking further down into the Earth crust and preserved there between hot and pressured layers, gradually transforming into oil reservoirs.

Early history

Oil in general has been used since early human history to keep fires ablaze, and also for warfare.[citation needed] Its importance in the world economy evolved slowly, with wood and coal used for heating and cooking, and whale oil used for lighting well into the 19th Century.

An early petroleum industry was established in the 8th century, when the streets of Baghdad were paved with tar, derived from petroleum through destructive distillation. In the 9th century, oil fields were exploited in the area around modern Baku, Azerbaijan, to produce naphtha. These fields were described by al-Masudi in the 10th century, and by Marco Polo in the 13th century, who described the output of those oil wells as hundreds of shiploads. Petroleum was distilled by al-Razi in the 9th century, producing chemicals such as kerosene in the alembic, which he used to invent kerosene lamps for use in the oil lamp industry.

The Industrial Revolution generated an increasing need for energy which was fuelled mainly by coal, with other sources including whale oil. However, it was discovered that kerosene could be extracted from crude oil and used as a light and heating fuel. Petroleum was in great demand, and by the twentieth century had become the most valuable commodity traded on the world market.

Galician oil wells

Imperial Russia produced 3,500 tons of oil in 1825 and doubled its output by the mid-century. After the oil drilling began in what is now Azerbaijan in 1848, two large pipelines were built in the Russian Empire: the 833 km long pipeline to transport oil from the Caspian to the Black Sea port of Batumi (Baku-Batumi pipeline), completed in 1906, and the 162 km long pipeline to carry oil from Chechnya to the Caspian.

At the turn of the 20th century, Imperial Russia’s output of oil, almost entirely from the Apsheron Peninsula, accounted for half of the World’s production and dominated international markets. Nearly 200 small refineries operated in the suburbs of Baku by 1884. As a side effect of these early developments, the Apsheron Peninsula emerged as the world’s “oldest legacy of oil pollution and environmental negligence” In 1878, Ludvig Nobel and his Branobel company “revolutionized oil transport” by commissioning the first oil tanker and launching it on the Caspian Sea.

History

Just for Feet began with a single store at Century Plaza in Birmingham with the original name Two Feet Ahead[verification needed] in 1977. Just For Feet operated over 140 superstores in 25 U.S. states and Puerto Rico by 1999. Most of the Just For Feet stores were located on outparcels adjoining major malls in cities, primarily in the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest.

Just For Feet Superstore

The first Just For Feet superstore opened adjacent to the Riverchase Galleria in 1987. Several features helped to distinguish Just for Feet from its competitors, including:

A small basketball court, either inside the store or in a fenced courtyard outside.

A large bank of video monitors located near the front of the store, where customers could watch live sporting events

Loud rock and dance music pumped into the store

A repeat customer program which enabled customers to receive a free pair of shoes after the purchase of 12 pairs

An in-store fast-food snack bar featuring Chicago-style hot dogs and popcorn

A complete selection of footwear styles from virtually every major athletic shoe supplier, as well as casual footwear from companies such as Rockport, Keds, Tretorn and Timberland

A large selection of clearance footwear, called the “Combat Zone” and located at the front of the store, where value-oriented customers could purchase discontinued styles of shoes, often as low as $9.99 or $19.99

Vendor concept shops, where customers could examine the complete footwear line of vendors such as Nike, Reebok, New Balance, Converse and adidas. In many cases, the concept shops also featured active wear such as shorts, t-shirts and warm-up suits from those vendors

“Moonlight Madness” sales, usually conducted around Christmas, where the store would be open extended hours (usually open until 4:00 a.m.) and offer customers outstanding bargains

In-store appearances by professional athletes, including Michael Jordan, Bjorn Borg, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Herschel Walker and Shaquille O’Neal

Growth in the 1990s

In 1992 a store was opened at The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to becoming a publicly traded company in 1994, other company-owned stores were opened near Nashville, Tennessee and in Kansas City, Missouri. Franchises were granted for stores that opened in San Antonio, Texas, suburban Atlanta, Georgia and Columbus, Ohio; the Texas and Georgia stores subsequently became company-owned locations. By the end of 1996, Just For Feet operated superstores in eleven states.

In 1997, Just For Feet bought Florida-based Athletic Attic and Michigan-based Imperial Sports, enabling the company to enter numerous markets (and several states) where it previously had no presence. The 1998 acquisition of New Jersey-based Sneaker Stadium, and the subsequent conversion of those stores to the Just For Feet nameplate, enabled the company to expand into the metropolitan areas of Boston, Norfolk, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.. These acquisitions enabled the company to become the second largest athletic footwear retailer near the end of the 20th century. One of the slogans the store used to position itself was he World Largest Athletic Shoe Store. The store was also famous for their promotion of buying any 12 pair of shoes, and then getting one pair for free, in the process, hence the other slogan, “Where Your 13th Pair is Free!”

Super Bowl Ad Controversy

This section requires expansion.

Just For Feet ran an ad during the 1999 Super Bowl XXXIII in which a Humvee of white men tracks a Kenyan runner. The men offer the runner a cup of water spiked with a sedative; the runner collapses, and the men force a pair of Nike sneakers onto his feet. The runner wakes up, screams, and runs away, attempting to shake the shoes off.

The ad immediately generated a backlash; Stuart Elliot, advertising columnist for the New York Times, called it “appallingly insensitive” while others accused it of racism. Just For Feet later sued its ad agency, Saatchi and Saatchi, alleging that they had relied on the expertise of the advertising agency against their initial negative reactions to the spot. Just For Feet later dropped the lawsuit.

THEM! is a gang of hippies who terrorized the streets of New York and battled Wonder Woman. The main members of the gang consisted of Top Hat, Moose Momma and Pinto. They first appeared in Wonder Woman (Vol. 1) #185, (November 1969), and were created by Mike Sekowsky and Dick Giordano.

History

Diana Prince returned to her boutique one night to find a young blonde girl, Cathy Perkins, who screams “Oh, dear GOD — I thought you were THEM!”

The three hippies find Cathy hiding in Diana’s shop, and Top Hat (the leader) throws a dog collar across the floor and orders Cathy to put it on. Diana demands the hippies leave the store, and asks Cathy to explain herself.

While Cathy bathes, she explains that her parents did not understand her and she had begun to feel stifled at home. She had decided to run away to the city to find freedom and space to think for herself. Diana asks her if she had found what she was looking for and Cathy shakes her head, replying that all she had found was THEM!

She had arrived in the city and had begun to look for a place to live. She had then met the three hippies who had offered her a room in their apartment. Things seemed fine for a few days. Then her clothes and money began to disappear. The gang told her she could still stay with them but a few days later changed their minds and said that Cathy would have to work for her room. They made her do everything (cook, clean, wash the clothes, etc.) First though, Top Hat would put the dog collar on her and beat her (the scars on her back were noticed by Diana when she was dressing). Top Hat had told Cathy that a dog beaten regularly knows its place and becomes a good dog.

The three hippies never let her alone. But one day, when she was alone with just Moose Momma, the hippie had taken some pills and fallen asleep. Seeing her chance, Cathy had removed her collar and made her escape, running and running until she eventually found an open back window into Diana’s Boutique.

The gang continued to try to reclaim Cathy on several occasions, and vandalized Diana’s store and merchandise. They did appear to seem intimidated by Tony Petrucci, a local man.

One night as Diana was contacting the Missing Persons Bureau (hoping to reunite Cathy with her parents), they set fire to Diana’s boutique, and Diana and Cathy escaped. Diana and Cathy stayed with Tony and his mother that night, but in the morning Diana discovered Cathy (who felt guilt over the fire) returned to the gang. Diana prepared to confront the gang, and Top Hat demanded Diana put on the collar. Suddenly, Tony and several men attack the gang, and Diana demands that Top Hat is hers. She attacks Top Hat, and smashes her head first into a nearby wall. Diamonds and jewelry spill out of her broken hat, and she and the rest of the gang are soon arrested.

Cathy is reunited with her parents, and becomes Diana’s assistant. The gang does not appear again.

Members

Top Hat - The leader of the gang wears a costume that a cross between a pimp, circus ringleader and Victorian opera goer (a green suit paired with a frilly yellow top and contrasted by a purple cape and top hat). She runs the gang and traps her slaves in collars.

Moose Momma - The muscle of the gang is a large woman who wears biker clothing accented with gold costume jewelry.

Pinto - The third main member of the gang dresses like a cowboy from the Old West.

The gang has other various unnamed members throughout their territory, as well as a male ally named Mingo who attacks Diana and Cathy on the streets.

Controversy

The shadows of THEM! appear on the cover of Wonder Woman #185.

Due to their cross-dressing attire as drag kings and stereotypical appearances (as well as S&M behaviors), it is speculated by many[citation needed] that the gang members are lesbians. The story was written during an era when LGBT characters could not be identified as such (due to the Comics Code Authority), and the story features many (often negative) stereotypes of the gay community. The other theory[citation needed] is this story may be a modern Cinderella story (with Cathy as Cinderalla, Diana as the fairy godmother, Tony as the prince, Top Hat as the wicked stepmother, and Moose Mama and Pinto as the wicked stepsisters), but with an LGBT-twist.

Wonder Woman editor/writer/penciler Mike Sekowsky once stated that he fully intended for these…(and so on)

Man powered Diamond cutting mill in 18th century

Diamond cutting is the art, skill and, increasingly, science of changing a diamond from a rough stone into a faceted gem. Cutting diamond requires specialized knowledge, tools, equipment, and techniques because of its extreme hardness.

The first guild of diamond cutters and polishers (diamantaire) was formed 1375 in Nuremberg, Germany, and led to the development of various types of ‘Cut’. This has two meanings in relation to diamonds. The first is the shape: round, oval and so on. The second relates to the specific quality of cut within the shape, and the quality and price will vary greatly based on the cut quality. Since diamonds are very hard to cut, special diamond bladed edges are used to cut them. The first major development in diamond cutting came with the “Point Cut” during the latter half of the 14th century. The Point Cut follows the natural shape of an octahedron shaped raw diamond, eliminating waste in the cutting process.

Diamond cutting process

The diamond cutting process includes these steps; planning, cleaving or sawing, bruting, polishing, and final inspection.

Planning

Diamond manufacturers analyze diamond rough from an economic perspective, with two objectives steering decisions made about how a faceted diamond will be cut. The first objective is that of maximum return on investment for the piece of diamond rough. The second is how quickly the finished diamond can be sold. Scanning devices are used to get 3-dimensional computer model of the rough stone. Also, inclusions are photographed and placed on the 3D model, which is then used to find an optimal way to cut the stone.

Maximizing Value

The process of maximizing the value of finished diamonds, from a rough diamond into a polished gemstone, is both an art and a science. The choice of cut is influenced by many factors. Market factors include the exponential increase in value of diamonds as weight increases, referred to as weight retention, and the popularity of certain shapes amongst consumers. Physical factors include the original shape of the rough stone, and location of the inclusions and flaws to be eliminated.

Weight retention

The weight retention analysis studies the diamond rough to find the best combination of finished stones as it relates to per carat value. For instance a 2.20 carat (440 mg) octahedron may produce either two half carat (100 mg) diamonds whose combined value may be higher than that of a 0.80 carat (160 mg) diamond and 0.30 carat (60 mg) diamond that could be cut from the same rough diamond.

The round brilliant cut and square brilliant cuts are preferred when the crystal is an octahedron, as often two stones may be cut from one such crystal. Oddly shaped crystals, such as macles are more likely to be cut in a fancy cuthat is, a cut other than the round brillianthich the particular crystal shape lends itself to.

An uncut diamond does not show its prized optical properties

Even with modern techniques, the cutting and polishing of a diamond crystal always results in a dramatic loss of weight; rarely is it less than 50%.[citation needed] Sometimes the cutters compromise and accept lesser proportions and symmetry in order to avoid inclusions or to preserve the weight. Since the per-carat price of a diamond shifts around key milestones (such as 1.00 carat), many one-carat (200 mg) diamonds are the result of compromising Cut quality for Carat weight. Some jewelry experts advise consumers to buy a 0.99 carat (198 mg) diamond for its better price or buy a 1.10 carat (220 mg) diamond for its better cut, avoiding a 1.00 carat (200 mg) diamond, which is more likely to be a poorly cut stone.

Color retention

In colored diamonds, cutting can influence the color grade of the diamond, thereby raising its value. Certain cut shapes are used to intensify the color of the diamond. The radiant cut is an example of this type of cut.

Natural green color diamonds most often have merely a surface coloration caused by natural…(and so on)

Founders

The group was founded by Ettore Sottsass led on 16 December 1980, and resolved to meet again with their designs in February 1981. The result was a highly-acclaimed debut at the 1981 Salone del Mobile of Milan, the world’s most prestigious furniture NEWY fair. The group, which eventually counted among its members Alessandro Mendini, Martine Bedin, Andrea Branzi, Aldo Cibic, Michele de Lucchi, Nathalie du Pasquier, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Shiro Kuromata, Matteo Thun, Javier Mariscal, George Sowden, Marco Zanini, and the journalist Barbara Radice, disbanded in 1988.

Origins

Named after the Bob Dylan song Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, the movement was a reaction against the post-Bauhaus “black box” designs of the 1970s and had a sense of humour that was lacking at the time in design.

Ettore Sottsass, called Memphis design the “New International Style”.

In contrast the Memphis Group offered bright, colourful, shocking pieces. The colours they used contrasted the dark blacks and browns of European furniture. The word tasteful is not normally associated with products generated by the Memphis Group but they were certainly ground breaking at the time.

All this would seem to suggest that the Memphis Group was very superficial but that was far from the truth. The group intended to develop a new creative approach to design.

On 11 December 1980 Ettore Sottsass organised a meeting with other such famous designers. They decided to form a design collaborative. It would be named Memphis after the Bob Dylan song Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again. Coincidentally the song had been played repeatedly throughout the evening.

They drew inspiration from such movements as Art Deco and Pop Art, styles such as the 1950s Kitsch and futuristic themes. Their concepts were in stark contrast to so called ‘Good Design’.

Memphis was the collective name of a group of architects and designers who were working in Milan among them George Sowden, Michele de Lucchi, Marco Zanini, Aldo Cibic, Matheo Thun, Nathalie du Pasquier and Martine Bedin, who were strongly influenced by the radical work of their entor, the older architect and designer, Ettore Sottsass (b. 1917), who had worked for Olivetti through the 1960s as well as experimenting on his own designs from the 1950s through to the 1970s. The group produced and exhibited, annually between1981 to 1988, collections of radical one-off designs furniture and decorative art objects for the most part which, with their unconventional shapes, brightly-coloured and patterned surfaces and apparent disregard for function, shocked the international design establishment and caused a widespread re-think about the rational, all-black, industry-oriented conventions of the odern design of the day and the emergence of a new movement, often referred to as ost-Modernism.

Theoretical concepts

Prepared to mix 20th century styles, colours and materials, it positioned itself as a fashion rather than an academic movement, and hoped to erase the International Style where Postmodernism had failed, preferring an outright revival and continuation of Modernism proper rather than a re-reading of it.

The Memphis group was comprised of Italian designers and architects who created a series of highly influential products in 1981. They disagreed with the approach of the time and challenged the idea that products had to follow conventional shapes, colours, textures and patterns.

End

The work of the Memphis Group has been described as vibrant, eccentric and ornamental. It was conceived by the group to be a ‘fad’, which like all fashions would very quickly come to an end. In 1988 Sottsass dismantled the group.

History

The original Magic Mile chairlift (c. 1940) was featured among the artwork on the Pee Chee folder

The lodge was constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression. That year, Timberline opened as Oregon’s first destination ski resort with a portable rope tow. The next year, the Magic Mile chairlift opened, as well as Silcox Hut, which sits about one thousand vertical feet (300 m) and a mile (1.6 km) above the main lodge, and was the original unloading and warming hut.

Summer skiing and summer race camps began at Timberline in 1956. Before the Palmer chairlift, which provided access above the 7,000-foot (2,100m) level, the conditions at Timberline allowed skiing from November through August.

Early days

Main article: Magic Mile

The Magic Mile chairlift was the longest chairlift in the world, and the second chairlift, of those built to be a chairlift when it opened in 1939. Financial troubles operating the Lodge and World War II closed it for several years during the 1940s and 1950s. The ski area has successfully operated since 1956.

Recent History

The Jeff Flood Express detachable high speed quad chair opened in the 2007-2008 ski season. With the new lift, Timberline added the Still Creek Basin to ski-able terrain on the lower mountain. Jeff Flood and the Still Creek Basin almost doubled the ski-able area below the timberline, which provides much needed capacity on days with wind or limited visibility when the Magic Mile and Palmer cannot open. Jeff Flood also improves connectivity to Stormin’ Normin and The Magic Mile from the lower mountain.

Thanks to the added terrain accessible from Jeff Flood, if the Palmer lift is open, it is possible to ski a non-stop run over 3.5miles (5.6km) in length with elevation change of ~ 4,000feet (1,200m).
